There are certainly a lot of good explanations as to why human meanness exists, as to why mean people exist. We live in a material world and human psychology is a flower, but a flower rooted in some rather miserable, all too real soil. It's even debatable whether human psychology... could be conceived of as a flower... I do believe it is though, in a real sense. But just as equally, it often just seems like a useless weed growing from dung. Yet it's best to remain optimistic. So what then is the process by which meanness flourishes at the cost of the soul?
People are malleable after all, and even if personality is anchored in concrete, material conditions, there is an active soul spark which can drive human change— after all, nature itself is infinitely adaptable and though chaotic is also harmonic. These poles of metaphysical imbalance are syntheses of the same fundamental being but become very distorted in the human perception matrix, which never syntheses wisdom fast enough to overcome its powerful drive for discrimination. Or something like that.........
What this boils to is that bad guys are essentially dormant or vacant souls. This is just my own perspective. Because there are some pretty horrible conditions which humans are immersed in and easily compromised by. And there may not be anything like inherently evil people, but the conditions, and the systems, surely create them. Yet people don't take life seriously in many ways, and don't recognize the karmic dimensions of their behaviors. It is very difficult to separate yourself from your deep personality drives, but it is not impossible. The lack of foresight in humans also contributes to how we will have clarity about our natures and the life we are creating both for ourselves and others. Greed, lust for power, pride, selfishness, are like beasts which have to be tamed, and yet they promise short-term rewards. Not easy things to defeat, but principles may still be erected over these strong forces, and at least having principles helps guide action however gradually.
